How to prepare for (and ACE) an online interview

You don’t need us to tell you that the world of work has changed in recent years. Covid-19 has drastically impacted the world of work, from how and where current employees work to how they hire and on-board new staff.

For many organisations when it comes to recruiting, the “new normal” now means online interviews, where Hiring Managers are either adding in an additional interviews or replacing face to face interviews all together!

So here are some tips to help you prepare and hopefully ace online interviews:

  • Make sure you’re in a quiet and professional environment. You want to ensure there are no distractions; turn your emails off on your computer, leave your mobile in the microwave and make sure those Amazon Prime deliveries aren’t all being delivered during the interview.
  • Although obvious for face-to-face interviews, tips such as maintaining eye contact, smiling, being aware of your body language and speaking clearly are all relevant for online interviews.
  • Prepare and practice! Don’t fall into the trap that just because it’s an online interview it’s not formal; make sure you’ve read the position description, have researched the company and have prepared questions to ask the Hiring Manager.
  • Clients will be expecting your camera to be on, so dress professionally and conduct the interview in a professional setting.
  • Murphy’s Law states that “if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible time” – this to us always means IT technical problems! Test out your equipment before the interview, make sure your internet, camera and microphone are all working and have the Hiring Manager’s contact number in case either of you encounter problems.

We know interviews can be daunting in any settling, that’s why at Acquainted Talent, we make it our mission understand your needs, wants and ambitions. Feel free to reach out if you’d like us to expend on the above, or if you are wanting to a general chat about your next career move.
