What quality covers
Quality roles make sure products, projects, and services meet the standard they’re meant to, every time. That covers quality management systems, inspection and testing, non-conformance and corrective action, supplier and internal audits, and the records that customers and certifiers rely on. In construction and infrastructure, it often means inspection and test plans and handover documentation, while in manufacturing it’s closer to process control, traceability, and customer complaints.

What good looks like in a hire
Experience with ISO 9001, ideally in a certified system, is the usual baseline, and lead auditor training is valued for roles that run audit programs. Many quality professionals come through an engineering, science, or trade background, which helps them understand the work they’re checking. In HSEQ roles, it’s worth being clear about which of quality, safety, and environment carries the most weight, so we can look for real depth where it counts. The people who do this well are thorough without being rigid, and they help teams fix the cause of a problem rather than simply recording it.
The market in Australia
Demand for quality professionals tends to follow activity in manufacturing and major projects, and contract roles often appear around certification, a new customer requirement, or project handover. Quality managers with strong systems experience and good people skills can be harder to find, and some strong candidates are working in neighbouring industries, so being open on industry background can widen the field.
