What safety work looks like in healthcare and aged care
In hospitals, aged care homes, and community services, safety work is shaped by the care being given. Common risks include manual handling and patient or resident handling, occupational violence and aggression, slips and trips, hazardous substances, fatigue from shift work, and the emotional demands of caring for people who are unwell or at the end of life. Community and home care adds the challenge of staff working alone in other people’s homes.
The roles we recruit
The roles range from advisors and coordinators to people managing WHS across a whole organisation, including:
WHS Advisor
Wellbeing Coordinator
Psychosocial Risk Advisor
Injury Management Advisor
Return to Work Coordinator
WHS Manager
What good looks like in a hire
A Cert IV or Diploma in WHS is a common baseline, and some people in these roles come from a nursing, allied health, or clinical background, which helps them earn credibility with care teams. Experience with occupational violence prevention, manual handling programs, and psychosocial risk is increasingly valued. Injury management and return to work roles call for knowledge of the relevant state scheme and a compassionate approach, as many claims involve both physical and psychological injury. Above all, safety professionals in care settings need to work with the reality that patient and resident care comes first.
The market in Australia
Healthcare and social assistance is Australia’s largest employing industry, and its workforce accounts for a significant share of serious workers compensation claims. With the psychosocial hazard regulations and aged care reform both raising expectations, demand for WHS and wellbeing people who understand care settings is steady, and experienced candidates can be harder to find outside the major cities.
