What environment and sustainability covers
Environmental roles look after an organisation’s day-to-day impact: approvals and licence conditions, environmental management plans, monitoring, waste, water, and contamination, and the relationships with regulators and communities that go with them. Sustainability roles tend to look further ahead, at emissions, climate risk, supply chains, and reporting, and at how the business talks about all of it. In many organisations the two work closely together, and often alongside safety.

What good looks like in a hire
For environmental roles, a degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field is the usual foundation, along with practical experience of environmental management systems, often certified to ISO 14001, and of working within approval and licence conditions. On site, it helps to be just as comfortable talking with a project team as writing a report. In sustainability, employers often look for experience with emissions reporting, climate risk, or ESG frameworks, and for people who can turn a strategy into something the wider business understands and acts on. For combined roles, we look for genuine depth on both the safety and environmental side.
The market in Australia
Mandatory climate-related financial reporting is being phased in for larger businesses, and many organisations are building sustainability capability they haven’t needed before. That means experienced sustainability and ESG people can be harder to find, particularly in senior roles. Environmental roles follow the project pipeline closely, especially in construction, infrastructure, and energy, so contract work is common and timing matters.
If you’re building your environmental or sustainability team, Submit a vacancy and we’ll be in touch within one business day, and if you’re exploring environmental or sustainability jobs, our current opportunities are a good place to start.
