What safety work looks like in retail
Retail health and safety looks after people in stores, distribution centres, and support offices. In stores, common risks include manual handling, slips and trips, ladders and stock storage, and customer aggression, which we’re hearing about more often from retail employers. Distribution centres bring forklifts, conveyors, and high-volume manual handling, and across the business, young and casual workers and seasonal peaks add to the challenge of keeping everyone trained and safe.
The roles we recruit
The roles range from advisors supporting a group of stores to people setting the safety direction for a national network, including:
Safety Advisor
Injury Management Advisor
Return to Work Coordinator
Wellbeing Coordinator
National Safety Manager
What good looks like in a hire
A Cert IV or Diploma in WHS is a common baseline. What really matters in retail is the ability to influence store and area managers who are juggling sales, staffing, and customers, so practical, simple safety programs tend to work far better than complex ones. Injury management and return to work roles need knowledge of the scheme in each state the business operates in, as national retailers often deal with several at once. Wellbeing roles need to reach a large, spread-out, and often part-time workforce in ways that genuinely help.
The market in Australia
Retail safety roles usually cover a wide footprint, so people who are comfortable travelling and working through others are valued. We’re seeing customer aggression and psychosocial risk move up the agenda, and experience across injury management and wellbeing is increasingly sought after. Candidates from logistics, hospitality, and other multi-site businesses can transfer well, which can widen the field when a role is harder to recruit.
