What injury management covers
Injury management starts when someone is hurt at work and continues until they’re back at safe, suitable work. It covers early contact with the injured worker, working with treating practitioners and the insurer or claims agent, return to work plans and suitable duties, and managing the claim itself under the relevant workers compensation scheme. In larger or self-insured organisations, it also includes claims strategy, premium management, and reporting to leaders on how claims are tracking.

Our injury management and workers compensation recruitment covers coordinators supporting individual workers through to people responsible for a whole claims portfolio, including:

What good looks like in a hire
Each state and territory runs its own workers compensation scheme, alongside Comcare nationally, so scheme knowledge is one of the first things employers ask about. Someone who knows one scheme well will still need time to learn another, and that’s worth weighing up early. Beyond technical knowledge, the people who do this well combine care with good judgement: they support an injured worker with genuine empathy, hold a fair line with insurers and treating practitioners, and help supervisors find suitable duties that are meaningful rather than token. Clear, careful file notes matter too, because a decision can rest on what was recorded months earlier.
The market in Australia
Return to work and workers compensation is a small, specialised field, and experienced people tend to stay where they’re valued, so good candidates are often not actively looking. Psychological injury claims have become a bigger part of the work, and they often need more time and care to manage, which raises the bar for experience. Where the role allows it, being flexible on which scheme a candidate knows can widen the field considerably.
