What safety work looks like in infrastructure
Infrastructure covers the projects that build roads, rail, ports, and water and energy networks, and the organisations that own and operate those assets once they’re built. On projects, safety work means coordinating many contractors, managing interfaces with live traffic or operating networks, and working within delivery models such as alliances. On the asset side, it’s about long-term risk: maintenance work, critical risks such as electrical and confined space work, contractor management, and keeping systems current for decades.
The roles we recruit
The roles range from advisors working alongside delivery teams to people heading an HSE function, including:
HSE Advisor
Environmental Advisor
HSE Systems Advisor
Health and Safety Business Partner
Project HSE Manager
Head of HSE
What good looks like in a hire
Employers in infrastructure often look for experience on projects of a similar scale and delivery model, along with qualifications such as a Diploma in WHS or a degree in OHS or environmental science. Systems advisors are expected to know ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 well and to work within an integrated management system. Business partners and senior leaders need to influence across a large organisation, work well with government clients, and bring a calm, consistent approach to a program that may run for years. Good stakeholder skills matter at every level.
The market in Australia
We’re seeing public investment keep a steady pipeline of major infrastructure projects, and experienced project HSE and environmental people are in demand as a result. Large programs often look for the same people at the same time, which can make senior roles harder to recruit. Owners and operators can offer longer-term roles that appeal to people ready to step off the project cycle, and that’s worth highlighting when you recruit.
