What safety work looks like in energy and renewables
Energy covers generation, transmission, and storage, from established gas and coal-fired assets to solar and wind farms, battery storage, and the transmission lines that connect them. Safety work spans electrical and high voltage risk, lifting and work at height, remote and regional sites, and contractor management through construction and commissioning. Environmental and sustainability work is a large part of the picture too, from approvals, biodiversity, and community consultation through to emissions reporting.

What good looks like in a hire
Experience in a similar setting counts for a lot, whether that’s major project construction, high voltage operations, or operating plant. A Diploma in WHS or a relevant degree is common, along with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 experience for systems roles. For renewable projects, employers value people who’ve worked through construction into operation and understand how risk changes along the way. Environmental and sustainability advisors need to work closely with approvals teams and local communities, and senior HSE leaders need to set consistent standards across contractors who may each bring their own system.
The market in Australia
The shift to renewable energy is bringing a large pipeline of solar, wind, battery, and transmission projects, many of them in regional areas, as AEMO’s Integrated System Plan sets out. That pipeline draws on the same experienced HSE and environmental people as construction and infrastructure, so good candidates are often weighing up more than one opportunity, and regional locations can add to the challenge. It helps to be clear early about rosters, location, and how long the role will run.
